Christine Malcolm on Building Great Hospitals for Less at HFS09

We have been very fortunate over the years to have Christine Malcolm speak at numerous CraigMichaels summits. Christine is currently an independent consultant, but from 2004 until the summer of 2009 she lead Kaiser Permanente’s National Facilities Services department, and was responsible for managing the company’s real estate portfolio, facility operations, and the design and construction of their medical facilities. During Christine’s tenure at KP she oversaw a $24 billion capital development and replacement program, making it the largest hospital construction program in the nation.

At the 2009 Healthcare Facilities Summit Christine gave a great presentation titled: How to Build Great Hospitals for Less: Proven Methods that Deliver Value. At a time when construction costs were soaring and the cost of green buildings was described as 20-50% higher than conventional design, Kaiser Permanente delivered 5 hospitals that an independent benchmarking organization showed cost 13% less than the prevailing standard. The presentation unveiled the key success factors that made this all possible and why all of these ideas can be implemented at health systems large and small.
